Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone)
بنزوفينون-3 (أوكسي بنزون)
UV filter (Annex VI) · INCI: Benzophenone-3 · CAS: 131-57-7
A permitted filter, but EU-restricted and debated - newer alternatives exist.
Why this verdict
Annex VI permitted UV filter: Face/hand/lip 6%; body (incl. sprays) 2.2%; other 0.5% (Reg (EU) 2022/1176). 'Contains Benzophenone-3' warning. Permitted but SCCS-restricted on endocrine grounds → caution.
What It Is
A widely-used UV filter the EU restricted over endocrine concerns.
The EU lowered its limits (6% face, just 2.2% body) because at the old levels it wasn't considered safe given potential endocrine-disrupting properties; it's also a known photo-allergen, and there are coral-reef environmental concerns. Permitted within the new caps, but among the more debated filters - many brands have moved to newer alternatives.
