Garlic

الثوم

Toxic food hazard (Allium)

The verdict

Toxic — same Allium danger as onion

What it is

A flavour ingredient from the same Allium family as onion.

WTF fact

Garlic causes the same Heinz-body red-blood-cell damage as onion, in both dogs and cats. It’s often sold as a “natural flea remedy” — that’s a myth, not a safe dose. Gram for gram it takes more garlic than onion to harm, but it still belongs on the do-not-feed list.

Evidence & status

Halal status: halal

Plant-derived.

Also known as

garlic powder · garlic extract · Allium sativum

Primary source

Merck Veterinary Manual, Garlic and Onion (Allium spp) Toxicosis in Animals — Heinz-body hemolytic anemia in cats, dogs and food-producing animals from raw/cooked/concentrated Allium.
