BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)

BHT (هيدروكسي تولوين مبيوتل)

Synthetic antioxidant preservative

The verdict

Permitted — milder cousin of BHA

What it is

A synthetic antioxidant related to BHA.

WTF fact

BHT does the same job as BHA and is permitted in pet and human food. It carries a lighter cloud than BHA — it’s not on the IARC possible-carcinogen list, and some studies even show it offsetting BHA’s effects — but expert opinion is split and it’s still a synthetic many owners skip. Same story as BHA: no proven harm to pets at use levels, with natural alternatives (tocopherols, rosemary) on cleaner labels.

Evidence & status

Halal status: halal

Synthetic; permissible.

Also known as

BHT · E321 · dibutylhydroxytoluene

Primary source

Williams & Whysner et al., Safety Assessment of BHA and BHT as Antioxidant Food Additives (Food Chem Toxicol): BHT is not DNA-reactive and can inhibit BHA-related neoplasia; permitted antioxidant in human and animal food; not IARC-classified as a carcinogen.
